Sussex University Introduces the UK’s First Climate Justice Degree

University Launches New BA in Climate Justice Amid Demand for Stronger Climate Education

The University of Sussex has announced the launch of the UK’s first undergraduate degree focused on climate justice.

The BA in Climate Justice, Sustainability, and Development, set to begin in 2026, will equip students with expertise in climate politics, activism, and environmental human rights, alongside practical green skills essential for driving real-world change.

A Hands-On Approach to Climate Education

Dr. Will Lock, co-convener of the new course and lecturer in International Development and Anthropology, emphasizes the university’s practical, real-world approach to environmental studies. This includes using the university’s campus forest food garden and integrating innovative assessments such as student-created podcasts instead of traditional essays.

“We’re introducing new ways of assessment and engagement, focusing on public communication and addressing global injustices,” says Lock.

Growing Demand for Climate Education

The course launch follows a Future Forum survey, which revealed that 72% of 14- to 18-year-olds want more rigorous and relevant climate change education, particularly within humanities and social sciences.

Lock highlights how students are already engaged with climate justice, driven by the real-life environmental changes they witness.

“Climate change is reshaping the world around them—it feels urgent, and students want to be involved,” he says. “With climate at the heart of global politics, there’s a growing demand to understand it in depth.”

By combining academic knowledge with hands-on learning, the University of Sussex aims to empower future leaders in climate justice and sustainability.
